Our pork comes from heritage breed pigs raised exclusively outdoors. Our pigs eat lush grass and dig up roots as deep as they desire. They are given fresh raw Jersey cow milk daily. Seasonally, our pork is finished on pasture grass, vegetables from our farm garden, and forest forage with abundant nut crop. This produces a fit pig that is well marbled dark meat.
When properly managed, pigs can play a significant role in clearing unwanted plant species and stimulating new growth. Not only does this benefit the pigs health but also the farm land. |
Our pasture raised chicken is raised exclusively outdoors in the open air. The chickens are moved to fresh pasture 2-3 times per day. Their diet is rich and diverse! A natural pasture, free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizer is a great place for a bird to find bugs, worms, seeds and plant foliage. All of which are part of the wild diet we try to mimic, making a succulent, flavourful omega 3 rich meat product.
Moving the chickens frequently to fresh pasture allows us to control their level of disturbance to the soil, distribute natural fertilizer (manure) evenly, and keep the chickens in a clean environment at all times |
Our lamb begin their journey in the middle of spring. Born outside, they never know the confines of a barn. They stay with the flock eating from spring grass and legume pastures and move to the forest for the hot summer months to browse the understory leaves and forest floor grasses. Their diet truly resembles that of a wild deer. This variety in a diet creates a flavour that is complex and interesting, satisfaction in every bite.
The varied diet of tree forage, weeds and wild grasses also helps promote excellent animal health. |
Muscovy duck are a unique endeavour. Especially since they are raised by our two sons as their inaugural enterprise in agriculture, aptly named “Brothers Birds”. Although a Muscovy is technically poultry it’s meat could be more suitably compared to beef. Muscovy duck can be safely and advisably cooked medium rare. Which produces a lean, succulent, steak sized breast when prepared in pieces. The rest of the duck is wonderful roasted also, but our personal favourite is as ‘duck confit’. |
Geese really are a wonderful addition to a small family farm. Their eagerness coupled with their ability to graze obscure places with their bill make them fantastic fence trimmers. They prefer grass as their main diet, even when offered something else. They are healthy, hardy converters of the sun’s nourishment, and they produce a beautiful dark table bird. |
